What a solar return is

A solar return chart is calculated for the moment the transiting Sun returns to the exact degree of the natal Sun, near a birthday. Astrologers use it as a symbolic map of the year ahead: which houses are emphasised, which planets sit on angles, which conversations may be louder.

It is read with the natal chart, not instead of it. Location at the time of the return is part of some techniques; other astrologers always cast it for the birthplace. State the method before treating a house as fate.

How to read it without over-promising the year

Start with the solar-return rising sign and the houses that contain the Sun, Moon, and Saturn. Then compare transits through the year. A solar return is a frame for questions — where to take responsibility, where to grow, where to rest — not a list of events.

Queries about a solar return vertex, or 'how to read solar chart', often mix techniques. The vertex is an additional sensitive point some astrologers use; it is not required to get value from a solar return, and Astro Codes does not currently calculate return charts or the vertex.

Start with an accurate natal Sun

You cannot cast a solar return without a precise natal Sun. Get the natal chart right first, including time if you want return angles. The birthday-year technique is only as honest as that foundation.
